What is powerflushing and why is it important?

Powerflushing.

Something you may have seen advertised or offered by plumbers and heating engineers, you know it is maybe something to do with your heating, but perhaps you’re not really sure what it is or why it is important…

What is Powerflushing?

Power flushing is a cleaning process designed to remove sludge, rust, and other debris from inside a central heating system.

Power flushing can take several hours or even a whole day – depending on the age of your heating system, when or if it has been power flushed before, and the number of radiators you have.

A machine called a pumping station is used to push old water out of the system and introduce new water until the water runs clear. Your engineer might need to use some different tools to loosen and remove particularly sticky sludge. Radiators are tackled separately.

After clearing out the system, your engineer will add chemicals to the water to help prevent sludge developing and building-up again.

Why do I Need Powerflushing?

Over time the water going round and round your pipes, radiators and boiler builds up with a mixture of dirt fragments and iron oxide pieces that come together and make a sticky liquid called sludge.
– Sludge can build up at the bottom of your radiators resulting in the bottom of your radiator being cold even while the top is hot
– Sludge is one of the biggest causes of boiler breakdowns as it blocks tubes
– Sludge could be costing you money as it makes your heating system less efficient as the boiler needs to work harder to heat up

How do I know if there is sludge in my heating system?

There are common symptoms which show your central heating system may be suffering from a build up of sludge:

– Radiators that only get hot at the top
– Dirty, black water or water with particles in it, is released if you bleed your radiators
– Thuds or clunks or other strange noises coming from your boiler

Plus, if you are about to have a new boiler installed and connected to an older system, it is highly advisable to have the older radiators and pipes powerflushed at the same time.
